Xuanjie received the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Science and Technology from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China in 2018.

He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in Dr. Jie Chen's group at the Univerisity of Alberta. His research interests include bioimpedance spectroscopy, biomedical health-care device, and mixed-signal integrated circuits.

Yiwei received his B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Alberta. Currently, he holds the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship. He has won many awards including the APEGA Past Presidents’ Medal, the Dean’s Citation in Engineering, the Dean’s Research Award, and the NSERC Undergraduate Research Award.

He is pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering (biomedical specialization). Yiwei has extensive experience in microsystem modelling/simulation, circuit design, micro/nano fabrication, photonics, and automation programming. His research focuses on the design and development of microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip devices.

YIWEI FENG

Yuqi holds a Bachelor of Nanoengineering with a concentration in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Dr. Jie Chen's research group at the University of Alberta, focusing on the application of Artificial Intelligence in the fields of psychiatry and healthcare systems.

Outside of academia, Yuqi is a fitness enthusiast who enjoys working out at the gym and going for bike rides. He values the importance of leading a balanced lifestyle and staying active, making exercise a regular part of his routine.

Zuyuan joined the BINARY research group in September 2020. He used to be a Gold medalist in 110 meters hurdles and is currently a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering, and his research interest are microfluidic sequencing chips and microfluidics biosensors. He received his B.Eng degree in Microelectronics from Northwestern Polytechnical University(NPU), Xi’an, China. He received the NPU’s Outstanding Graduates honor in 2020, and he also won the National Scholarship and 1st Class scholarship for several times as an undergraduate student in NPU.

Wei finished his undergraduate study in Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and majored in Automation control in 2016. He got the China council scholarship and began his Ph.D. study in this group. He now has finished his first project about gene delivery, published his first journal paper and passed his Ph.D. candidacy exam. He will continue his research work in the field of artificial intelligence to detect tuberculosis and depression in different projects.

Kaining is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical Computer Engineering Department at the
University of Alberta. His work focuses specifically on Multimodal Machine Learning
(MMML) and its impact on Automated Depression Diagnosis (ADD). He is awarded
the China Government Scholarship (CSC). His favourite place to do research is not his
office but his bedroom, which faces the North Saskatchewan River.

Steven recently graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in BSc in Electrical Engineering and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta. Steven’s interests lay in the field of Biomedical and Communication Engineering, the current project he is working is colorimetric sensor development, and he is focusing on the communication aspect. Outside of the academic setting, Steven enjoys reading and board games, but growing up in the province of Alberta allowed Steven to become accustomed to the cold winter and develop a hobby in snowboarding.

Gaser is a senior Postdoctor at Binary research group (BRG), Faculty of Engineering. He graduated with a Ph.D. degree in Material Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Drug Discovery, Neuroscience, and Robotics from Universita Degli Studi Di Genova, Italy. His dissertation was about exploiting the optical properties of metal-based nanomaterials to build biosensors, smart 3D hybrid materials, and optical contrast agents for cell imaging. After working at Istituto Italiano Di Tecnologia, Italy, he moved to the BRG. He worked on several research projects using state of the art microelectronics, microfabrication techniques, surface chemistry, and material sciences to develop portable biosensors covering biomedical, environmental, and agricultural application. His research also focuses on developing smart nanocarriers for gene and drug delivery, and other biomedical applications. With over thirty peer-reviewed research articles, patents, and conference presentations, his research covers a broad spectrum of material sciences, nanobiotechnology, and developing new analytical and bioanalytical techniques.

Jiajun received the B.Sc. degree in Electronic Science and Technology from Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China, in 2019. He is currently working towards the Ph.D. degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering within the Binary Research Group, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada.

Alexandra holds a BSc and MSc in Chemistry/Biology from Ukraine and obtained her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Alberta in 2017. Currently, Alexandra works in BINARY group as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, bringing her research experience in the area of biotechnology, in particular, microbial based bioprocesses and cell-based assays. In collaboration with Fudan University in China, Alexandra is working on the development of a biosensor for the detection of IgG galactosylation as a biomarker for several diseases.

Her non-research interests include traveling, tennis, reading, collecting vintage Christmas ornaments, cooking and working out.

She has research experiencesin gene expression and regulation via transcriptomeanalysis (next generation RNA-sequencing). Lukas received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering & Information Technology with specialization in Microelectronics from Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany, in 2018. Subsequently, he joined BINARY research group and is now pursuing his Ph.D. while designing a novel microfluidic platform for massive single cell RNA sequencing and analysis. His research involves close collaboration with Alberta’s Cross Cancer Institute and is aimed to be applied to highly critical fields in cancer research, such as CAR-T or stem cell therapy. He is holder of several awards and scholarships, both within Germany and Canada.

Lukas has extensive experience in nanofabrication, digital electronics, computer assisted process modelling, and circuit design. When he is not in the lab, he can be found either playing video and board games with his friends, or relaxing while playing piano.

Dan Jin is completing a PhD at the University of Alberta’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. She joined PBG BioPharma in July 2020 as a Research Scientist. Dan’s passion revolves around tapping into the potential of using cannabis inflorescences, leaves, stem, and roots for developing new natural health products & natural medicines and for bridging traditional medicine with modern science.

Dan has six years’ experience in cannabis testing and chemotaxonomy. She leads a cannabis classification project, a joint program between the Labs-Mart Inc., a third party testing lab, and the University of Alberta. Dan is responsible for conceiving the program, designing the experiments, and setting the direction for research. Throughout her career, Dan has developed quantitative methods for an extensive list of secondary metabolites in cannabis analytical chemistry methods, drafted commercials standard operating procedures, and validated methods in accordance with Health Canada protocols, including the quantification of cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and sterols. She speaks at academic conferences and publishes articles in the fields of Analytical Chemistry, Natural Health Products, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
